Straight Line Editorial Development

Straight Line’s Short List of Guiding Principles

We try never to work on programs we wouldn’t want our own children to use.

We try only to do what we’re good at.

We try never to take on more work than we can do well.

No matter what the nature of the project, we try to create the most interesting reading materials and activities for kids that we can.

We strive for clarity and practicality in writing lesson plans and other teacher guide materials.

We believe in instruction that works:
• We read educational research. We plan and write materials with an eye toward incorporating the latest relevant, validated research findings.
• We use our own education backgrounds to determine whether a particular activity or procedure is likely to work.

We believe in materials and programs that sell:
• We focus continuously on state grade-level standards. We do not, however, let them get in the way of effective instruction.
• We respect publishers’ marketing plans and implement them in ways that enhance learning.
• We know and follow the written and unwritten rules of acceptability.
